Structural steel welding utilizes a commercial-grade steel product and one of several welding techniques. Structural steel welding is used to prepare support beams and poles or to strengthen materials that are part of a building's framework. 

Structural Steel Processes

Structural steel welding processes may be conducted in a factory setting or onsite, at the place where a construction project is going to be performed or already has been performed. The use of hand welding equipment often allows a welder to prepare or fix steel pieces that will permanently be used in an indoor or outdoor setting. Various steel grades can be welded, but some of the more malleable steel types may not be strong enough to provide the support needed in a multi-story building.

Welding Equipment

A welder who provides commercial services will research the steel shape and size of the material that is being addressed. The location of the material may limit the amount of welding equipment that can be used. If structural beams are located in tight spaces, flux-core arc welding may be needed. This process involves a semi-automatic or automatic process. Consistent voltage is released from the welding equipment. This type of welding yields uniform results. Metal is applied at a high deposition rate.

Stud welding is used for the fabrication of steel materials. This process is often performed in a shop. It consists of using fasteners. The fasteners are secured to the base steel material. Threaded, unthreaded, and tapped fasteners can be used with this welding process. Stud welding is often used to create complex designs. Welding is always performed on one side of a steel item.

The results that are attained are often superior to other welding processes. This is due to there only being visible signs of fasteners along one side of a sheet of steel. If the cosmetic appearance of a steel structure is a concern, a structural steel welder may be hired to perform stud welding. The equipment and application requirements that will be used during a structural steel welding job will be outlined through a welding service.

A client of a welding service may be supplied with some visual examples of how structural steel beams and other support pieces will look at the end of a welding project. During the welding process, other onsite construction projects may need to be postponed. This will ensure that all of the welding steps are performed in a safe environment.
